Hey, how're you doing?
Rick Battaglini (BAT-tah-LEE-nee) says he's feeling more like himself. But a year ago, it was like his 'get up and go', got up and went.
I started to feel lethargic and tired, weight gain, loss of muscle mass.
The 49-year-old thought his age was creeping up on him. But his doctor said he was probably going through andropause - the male version of menopause.
Women, when they go into menopause, it's a rapid decline so they have symptoms immediately. But the problem with male menopause, it's a slow decline where actually men, they'll have symptoms, a lot of times they're associated with aging, but it's actually due to low testosterone.
Testosterone is the hormone that makes men, men. Levels typically start dropping around age 40.
We're finding now, though, even men coming in at 25, 30, very low levels of testosterone.
The appropriate blood test can check for deficiencies.
A lot of people will check the total testosterone but all that's bound up. So, you need to check the free testosterone which is the active.
If levels are low, there are hormone replacement options, including injections, patches and gels.
Once you start testosterone you need to be monitored to be sure the levels are adequate. There are some types of testosterone actually don't come up on a blood test, so you need to know clinically what to look for.
Rick gets weekly hormone shots and has been noticing an improvement.
I just feel good. I'm sleeping better and my thought process is clearer.
If you've lost your gusto, replacement therapy may help you get it back. But first have a heart-to-heart with a knowledgeable doctor to talk about the pros and cons. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
