Hunting is Danny Andrews' passion, but it's a passion he pursues with safety in mind, especially if he uses a tree stand.
I had a good friend in Mississippi that fell out of a climbing tree stand and did not have a safety strap on, and broke his neck and killed him.
Tree stands give hunters a better vantage point, but a recent study provides a wider scope to the risk of injuries.
We were fortunate to put together the information from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, with information from the U.S. Wildlife Service on the number of hunters in the United States.
After crunching the numbers, the U-A-B researchers found interesting patterns among the thousands who are injured.
The largest number of injuries happened among those between the ages of 35 to 44. However the younger age groups had fewer number of injuries, but their rate was higher.
They also targeted the types of injuries from these falls… many with life-long effects.
While we saw the majority of injuries were lower extremity, we did see a fairly significant number of spinal injuries and head injuries, and the long-term consequences of those could be very significant, particularly for a younger person.
The goal of this research—awareness.
Are the, are the individuals reading the safety precautions? Are they installing them properly, and are they using the proper safety equipment.
The other very important thing is a safety strap. You want a safety strap hooked to the tree as you go up.
